Jul 4 MACRAME PLANT HANGER TUTORIAL

I have wanted a macrame plant hanger for a long time and when I was given this beauty of a plant pot from some friends for my birthday, it seemed right to make something for it.

(These friends also cut out 30 hearts with something they liked about me written on each one and hid them among the leaves, which was such a sweet and fun touch, and I may be copying this idea for any future birthday gifts I give)

I prefer things minimal so I went for a very simple knotted design using some neutral macrame rope and untreated wooden beads and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. Here's how to make it.

WHAT YOU NEED

To make this simple macrame plant hanger, you will need:

11.25 metres of macrame rope in 5mm thickness. I used Bobbiny macrame rope.
wooden ring with a diameter of at least 25mm
2 wooden beads (with 10mm hole size)
4 wooden beads (with 6 - 7mm hole size)
measuring tape
scissors

STEP 1

For those using our plant hanger kit, cut your length of rope into four equal lengths. Or cut four lengths of macrame rope each 110" long. Thread them through the wooden ring, bringing the ends to meet so the wooden ring is in the centre.

STEP 2

Take one of the large 10mm hole size wooden beads and thread all the rope ends through it. Push the bead right up to the wooden ring. It helps to twist it as you push it up.

STEP 3

Divide the eight ends out into four pairs.

Add one of the smaller wooden beads to each pair of ends, 8" down from the large wooden bead.

STEP 5

Tie a knot under each of the beads to secure it in place. You have probably been tying this basic knot your entire life and not known its name. Apparently it's called an overhand knot (steps 1 and 2) and I doubled it up (steps 3 and 4). I'll call this a double knot for the rest of the tutorial.

Your plant hanger should now look like this:

Next pair up the strands and tie them together using a double knot 5" down from the wooden beads like this:

STEP 7

Next work a second set of double knots 5" down from the first set of double knots. Start by holding the last knot that you tied (in step 4) and pair up its ends with the two external strands like this:

Now finish the second set of double knots by pairing up the remaining strands like this:

STEP 8

Next thread all the ends through the second large 10mm hole bead and push it up the strands until it is 3" below the second set of double knots. Tie a knot underneath the large bead like this:

Your plant hanger should now look like this, ready for its plant friend!

STEP 9

To pop your plant pot inside the hanger I find it easiest to remove the plant and turn the pot upside down. Place the large bead in the middle of the pot base and arrange the four pairs of strands as in the image below.
